With the intention to build an immersive bodily experience, I create work that appeals to more than one sensory organ, experimenting with tactile and/or sound-producing sculptures. I use my art as a channel for discussions around gender performance, queer histories, vulnerability, desire, and bodily disharmony. As my creative practice originated with figure drawing and painting, my sculptural work is deeply connected to bodily structure, movement, and stages of transition. The move from two to three dimensional mediums was prompted by the desire for interactive objects that could respond to the beholder and be held in the hands, facilitating a deeper connection between created objects and a communal audience.
While operating from an intuitive and sensory seeking perspective, I choose to work with clay and wax as these two materials allow me to create fluid organic forms. Through ceramic handbuilding and lost wax casting processes, I build a general form through additive means, slowly carving away material to a certain thickness, and then refine the outer surface texture. I use metalworking techniques such as soldering and chain making to connect ceramic and casted elements to produce functional sound-making objects. I utilize vitreous enamel to add layers of mesmerizing transparent pigment over copper silhouettes, firing numerous thin layers to produce a glossy luminous surface over the underlying metal.
